When Handan was a child, her father adopted an orphan named Cevat. However, her father died in an accident shortly thereafter. Orhan, Handan's older brother, who could never accept Cevat, saw this situation as an opportunity. He put Cevat to work as a laborer on his farm. He also sent Handan abroad to study for a while.
