About This Tool

The digital nomad lifestyle has transformed how millions of people work and live. Whether you are planning your first remote work stint abroad or optimizing your next move as a seasoned location-independent professional, understanding the true cost of living in a city is the difference between thriving and scrambling. The DropThe Digital Nomad Calculator gives you a complete monthly cost breakdown for over 5,000 cities around the world, built on real data from Numbeo, OpenStreetMap, and Ookla speed measurements.

This tool goes beyond basic cost-of-living comparisons. For each city, you get a Nomad Score that factors in internet reliability, safety, climate comfort, coworking availability, and overall affordability -- the metrics that actually matter when you are choosing where to base yourself. Enter any city, set your monthly budget, and instantly see whether that city fits your financial plan. The budget gauge shows your surplus or deficit at a glance, while the detailed breakdown covers rent for a one-bedroom apartment, coworking space, groceries and dining, local transport, utilities and internet, and entertainment.

Every data point is sourced from our database of 64,000+ cities enriched with cost-of-living indices, internet speed tests from Ookla, safety scores, climate averages, and air quality measurements. The Nomad Score algorithm weighs these factors based on what the remote work community consistently ranks as most important: fast internet, affordable housing, personal safety, reasonable climate, and access to coworking infrastructure. Use the calculator to compare potential destinations, validate your budget assumptions, or simply explore what life costs in cities you have been curious about.

Where Does This Data Come From?

Cost-of-living data is derived from Numbeo indices, which aggregate user-reported prices for rent, groceries, restaurants, transportation, and utilities across thousands of cities. We convert index values to estimated USD monthly costs using New York City as the baseline (index 100). Rent estimates reflect one-bedroom apartments in city centers.

Internet speed data comes from Ookla Speedtest measurements aggregated at the city level, covering download and upload speeds. Safety indices are sourced from Numbeo safety surveys and cross-referenced with national crime statistics. Climate data uses historical temperature averages from weather station records. Air quality measurements are based on annual PM2.5 concentrations from ground-level monitoring stations and satellite data.

The Nomad Score is a composite metric (0-10 scale) that weighs internet speed (25%), cost affordability (25%), safety (20%), climate comfort (15%), and infrastructure quality (15%). Cities must have data across at least three of these dimensions to receive a score. Coworking cost estimates are based on average hot-desk monthly rates from coworking aggregators and local surveys.

Frequently Asked Questions

What costs are included in the monthly breakdown?
The breakdown covers six categories: Rent (one-bedroom apartment in city center), Coworking (monthly hot desk or cafe budget), Food (groceries plus dining out), Transport (local public transit and occasional rides), Utilities and Internet (electricity, water, mobile data, and home internet), and Entertainment (social activities, gym, and leisure).
How is the Nomad Score calculated?
The Nomad Score (0-10) is a weighted composite of internet speed (25%), cost affordability (25%), safety (20%), climate comfort (15%), and infrastructure quality (15%). A score above 7 indicates an excellent nomad destination. Scores below 4 suggest significant challenges in one or more key areas.
How accurate are the cost estimates?
Cost estimates are based on Numbeo indices and represent averages for each city. Actual costs vary depending on neighborhood, lifestyle choices, and market conditions. We recommend treating these as baseline estimates and adding a 10-20% buffer for unexpected expenses.
Are the costs in USD?
Yes, all costs are displayed in US Dollars. The estimates are converted from local currency using current exchange rates and Numbeo purchasing power data. For cities with volatile currencies, costs may fluctuate more than the displayed averages suggest.
How often is the data updated?
Cost-of-living indices update quarterly as Numbeo aggregates new price reports. Internet speed data refreshes monthly from Ookla. Safety indices update semi-annually. We show the most recent available data for each metric, and the Nomad Score recalculates whenever underlying data changes.
