About This Tool

The DropThe University Comparison tool lets you place any two universities side by side and evaluate them across the metrics that matter most: global rankings, tuition costs, admissions selectivity, academic quality, and institutional profile. Every data point draws from our database of more than 27,000 universities spanning every continent and academic tradition.

Choosing a university is one of the most consequential decisions a person makes. Yet reliable side-by-side comparison data is scattered across dozens of sites, each with its own methodology and blind spots. This tool brings together three of the most respected global ranking systems -- QS World University Rankings, Times Higher Education (THE), and the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU, also known as the Shanghai Ranking) -- alongside hard financial and academic data so you can see the full picture in one place.

Beyond rankings, the comparison covers domestic and international tuition fees, acceptance rates, student and faculty counts, student-to-faculty ratios, research output metrics, founding year, location, and whether the institution is public or private. Each metric is presented with clear visual indicators showing which university leads, and for ranking metrics the tool correctly interprets lower rank numbers as better positions.

Whether you are a prospective student weighing offers, a researcher evaluating institutional partnerships, a parent helping guide a decision, or simply curious about how two institutions stack up, this tool delivers the data you need in seconds. Select two universities using the search fields and the comparison renders instantly with grouped metrics and a final score summary.

Where Does This Data Come From?

University ranking data comes from three globally recognized systems. The QS World University Rankings evaluate institutions based on academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty-to-student ratio, citations per faculty, and international diversity. Times Higher Education (THE) rankings assess teaching, research environment, research quality, industry engagement, and international outlook. The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) focuses on academic and research performance indicators including Nobel laureates, highly cited researchers, and publications in Nature and Science.

Financial data such as tuition fees (domestic and international) is gathered from official university publications and national education databases. Admissions statistics including acceptance rates and enrollment figures come from institutional disclosures and government higher education reporting bodies. Research output metrics are derived from bibliometric databases. All data is updated periodically as new releases become available, and indicators where data is unavailable for a given university are clearly marked.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many universities are in the database?
We have profiles for more than 27,000 universities and higher education institutions worldwide, covering every major ranking system and most accredited institutions globally.
Where do the ranking numbers come from?
Rankings are sourced from three systems: QS World University Rankings, Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, and the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU/Shanghai Ranking). Each uses different methodologies, which is why a university may rank differently across them.
Why does a lower ranking number show as better?
University rankings work like race positions: rank 1 is the best, rank 100 means the institution is the 100th best. The tool correctly treats lower rank numbers as better performance and highlights them accordingly.
Are tuition fees shown in a specific currency?
Tuition fees are stored in USD for consistency across international comparisons. Actual fees at each institution may be denominated in local currency; we convert to USD using current exchange rates at the time of data collection.
How often is the data updated?
Ranking data updates annually when each organization publishes new results (typically between June and October). Tuition, enrollment, and institutional data update as new figures are released by universities or national education bodies.
